Profile of the Programme

The Graduate Program in Chemical Engineering pursues the goal of graduating expert engineers and qualified researchers in the area of Chemical Engineering. The Master's degree requires course work and thesis research. The students will conduct original research and prepare a thesis, then make an oral defense of their completed research. Students require about four semesters beyond the Bachelor's degree to complete a graduate program. This program intends to include all kinds of practical and the theoretical aspects of the field of study and it aims at enabling students with the opportunity to specialize in one of the areas in Chemical Engineering to equip students with the ability to do research in the area.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Depending on the degrees awarded, theoretical or practical courses taken as part of a degree (completed or not completed) may lead to recognition of these as prior learning by the programme administration. The students who have taken courses in another institution in Turkey or abroad can ask for credit and grade transfer. The executive boards of relevant programme will decide on the courses to be transferred covering students' entire academic program once and for all with the condition that the request for transfer be made within the first week of the academic year, the requests cannot be repeated.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student with a master's degree with thesis must have at least 7 courses and seminar courses, not less than 60 ECTS credits, proficiency exam and thesis proposal, and the Specialization Field Course and Thesis study, provided that it is not less than 180 ECTS credits. A student who has been accepted with a bachelor's degree must have at least 14 courses and seminar courses, not less than 120 ECTS credits, qualification exam and thesis proposal, and the Specialization Field Course and Thesis study, not less than 180 ECTS credits. A student enrolled in a doctoral program must have a grade of at least YT, CC or above from all courses taken, and a GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00. In addition, it is compulsory to take at least one course that includes Scientific Research Techniques and Research and Publication Ethics during graduate education. The duration of the program is 8 semesters for students who have a master's degree with thesis, and the maximum completion period is 12 semesters. For students admitted with a bachelor's degree, the program duration is 10 semesters and the maximum completion period is 14 semesters. During this period, the student who meets the above conditions and prepares and successfully defends his doctoral thesis graduates from the program. Access to Further Studies

May apply to doctorate programmes in any field or proficiency in fine arts programmes.

This graduate program intends to equip students with the ability to access, evaluate and interpret the information doing research in the field. In this program, the student is obliged to take at least 7 regular courses, a seminar course and a Field Specialization course providing no less than 52.5 ETCS credits and successfully complete a dissertation work with minimum of 30 ETCS credits. The seminar course, Field Specialization course and the dissertation work are assessed with satisfactory (YT) and unsatisfactory (YZ) grades. Starting the latest at the beginning of the 3rd semester, each semester the student is obliged to register to thesis work.The student can enroll maximum to 2 undergraduate courses provided they were not previously taken. Moreover, courses offered by other higher educational institutions can be taken with the recommendation of the related department and approval of the board of directors of the related institute.Duration of the graduate program is 4 semesters. If the requirements of the master’s program are met, the student may graduate before this time. If the graduate student has a GPA below 1.50 at the end of the first 2 semesters or any following one, he/she will be dismissed from the institution.To be considered successful, a graduate student is required to get a grade of CC, YT or above in all his courses and achieve a minimum GPA of 2.50. Students who are not successful at the end of 4 semesters will be dismissed from the institute.A student who gets YZ grade from his thesis study consecutively two or intermittent three times will be dismissed from the institute.Students who successfully completed their credit courses and seminar course, but could not finalized their thesis work and could not take thesis examination at the end of 4th semester-with the recommendation of the related department and approval of the board of directors of the related institute- may be granted an extension of maximum of two semesters to defend their studies.A student in the graduate program is required to write his/her thesis in the accordance with the related institute’s guidelines and orally defend it to a jury.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

A variety of assessment methods such as mid-term(s), assignment(s), exercise(s), project(s), practice(s), and a final exam are implemented in the programme. Assessment methods may include classical test(s), multiple-choice test(s), homework(s), performance evaluation(s), and product evaluation(s). In order to graduate from the programme, cumulative GPA must be minimum 2.00. A course grade is constituted by evaluating the above stated elements and given by using letters. Letter grades and their associated coefficients are as follows;
The contribution of the mid-term evaluations to the final grade cannot be less than 30 or more than 70 %. In the final evaluation, the course instructor takes into account the overall success of all students and the following letter grades are assigned:
