  • 1. Defines dams. 1.1. Classifies the main and auxiliary components of a dam. 1.2. Can determine the site (axis location) for a dam. 1.3. Analyzes topographical, geological, and environmental characteristics. 1.4. Designs and positions the dam body and outlet structures (spillway) in the site plan.
  • 2. Calculates the forces acting on dams 2.1. Calculates the forces acting on gravity, concrete, and arch dams. 2.2. Calculates the forces acting under normal loading, flood conditions, and overload conditions.
  • 3. Performs safety checks against forces acting on dams. 3.1. Calculates safety against overturning. 3.2. Calculates safety against sliding. 3.3. Calculates allowable foundation bearing stresses. 4.4. Calculates allowable shear and total shear-sliding stresses.
  • 4. Defines the classifications and characteristics of dams. 4.1. Determines the locations and selection criteria for prestressed concrete gravity dams. 4.2. Determines the locations and selection criteria for roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gravity dams. 4.3. Determines the locations and selection criteria for arch dams (constant-radius, constant-angle, variable-radius, and variable-angle arch dams). 4.4. Determines the locations and selection criteria for embankment dams (earthfill, rockfill, and composite/mixed-fill dams). 4.5. Determines the locations and selection criteria for buttress dams.
  • 5. Determines dam reservoir volume and the methods for its calculation. 5.1. Calculates flood magnitude, dead storage volume, freeboard, dam height, and safety margin.
  • Performs the design and calculation of energy dissipating structures (stilling basins) for dams.
