Profile of the Programme

The Master’s Programme in Pilotage aims to enable students holding an undergraduate degree in flight training or engineering to acquire the ability to access, evaluate, and interpret information by conducting scientific research in areas such as flight operations management, flight science, flight training, and flight safety.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Depending on the degrees awarded, theoretical or practical courses taken as part of a degree (completed or not completed) may lead to recognition of these as prior learning by the programme administration. The students who have taken courses in another institution in Turkey or abroad can ask for credit and grade transfer. The executive boards of relevant programme will decide on the courses to be transferred covering students' entire academic program once and for all with the condition that the request for transfer be made within the first week of the academic year, the requests cannot be repeated.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student with a master's degree with thesis must have at least 7 courses and seminar courses, not less than 60 ECTS credits, proficiency exam and thesis proposal, and the Specialization Field Course and Thesis study, provided that it is not less than 180 ECTS credits. A student who has been accepted with a bachelor's degree must have at least 14 courses and seminar courses, not less than 120 ECTS credits, qualification exam and thesis proposal, and the Specialization Field Course and Thesis study, not less than 180 ECTS credits. A student enrolled in a doctoral program must have a grade of at least YT, CC or above from all courses taken, and a GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00. In addition, it is compulsory to take at least one course that includes Scientific Research Techniques and Research and Publication Ethics during graduate education. The duration of the program is 8 semesters for students who have a master's degree with thesis, and the maximum completion period is 12 semesters. For students admitted with a bachelor's degree, the program duration is 10 semesters and the maximum completion period is 14 semesters. During this period, the student who meets the above conditions and prepares and successfully defends his doctoral thesis graduates from the program. May apply to doctorate programmes in any field or proficiency in fine arts programmes.

The thesis-based master’s programme consists of a total of at least 120 ECTS credits, comprising at least eight courses including a seminar course, provided that they are not less than a total of 60 ECTS credits, and, compulsorily, a specialization field course and thesis study, provided that they are not less than 60 ECTS credits in total. In addition to these eight courses, it is compulsory to take at least one course covering the subjects of Scientific Research Techniques and Research and Publication Ethics during graduate education. The seminar course, specialization field course, and thesis study are evaluated with the letter grades YT or YZ. No more than 60 ECTS credits may be taken in one semester.The student takes the seminar course from the thesis advisor only once in the second semester. All students of the thesis advisor register for the same seminar course. The subject of the seminar course is determined by the thesis advisor and is reported to the Institute Directorate through the head of the department/major art branch, and is announced by the Institute. After the seminar subject is announced by the Institute, it cannot be changed. The student is required to present the seminar to the audience on the specified day and time. A student who fails the seminar course repeats the seminar course in the following semester. In the case of repetition, the seminar subject may be changed with the approval of the thesis advisor and the approval of the Institute Directorate.At most two of the courses to be taken by the student may be selected from the undergraduate courses of the University, provided that they were not taken during undergraduate education. A course within this scope cannot be taken from another higher education institution without the recommendation of the head of the department/major art branch and the approval of the Institute Executive Board.With the recommendation of the head of the Institute department/major art branch and the approval of the Institute Executive Board, the student may take at most two courses from graduate courses offered at other higher education institutions.Excluding the period spent in scientific preparation, the duration of the programme is four semesters, starting from the semester in which the courses related to the programme in which the student is enrolled are offered, regardless of whether the student registers each semester.A student who, at the end of four semesters, fails to successfully complete the credit-bearing courses and seminar course included in the curriculum, or who has a course/courses for which he/she has received the letter grades CD, DC, DD, FF, YZ, or DZ, or who fails to achieve a GPA of 2.50, is dismissed from the programme.A master’s student who is successful in the thesis examination, satisfies the other conditions for graduation, submits the final copy of the bound master’s thesis approved by the jury to the Institute within one month from the date of taking the thesis examination, and whose thesis is found to comply with the Guide in terms of format, is awarded a thesis-based master’s diploma, provided that the report generated by the plagiarism detection software programme created by the Institute for the final copy of the thesis is found appropriate. The Institute Executive Board may extend the submission period by at most one additional month. A student who does not fulfill these conditions cannot receive his/her diploma until the conditions are fulfilled, cannot benefit from student rights, and is dismissed from the programme if the maximum period expires.The diploma bears the name of the programme in the Institute department/major art branch in which the student is enrolled, as approved by the Council of Higher Education.The date on which the copy of the thesis signed by the jury is submitted is the date of graduation.One copy of the thesis is sent electronically by the Institute to the Presidency of the Council of Higher Education within three months from its submission.If requested by a student whose thesis has been rejected, a non-thesis master’s diploma is awarded to him/her, provided that the rejected thesis is accepted by the Institute Executive Board as a term project and that he/she has taken and successfully completed 10 courses of at least 60 ECTS credits. A student within this scope who cannot satisfy the graduation requirements for the non-thesis master’s programme is given one additional semester of study in order to fulfill the graduation requirements. A student who still cannot satisfy the graduation requirements for the non-thesis master’s programme at the end of this period is dismissed from the programme.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

A variety of assessment methods such as mid-term(s), assignment(s), exercise(s), project(s), practice(s), and a final exam are implemented in the programme. Assessment methods may include classical test(s), multiple-choice test(s), homework(s), performance evaluation(s), and product evaluation(s). In order to graduate from the programme, cumulative GPA must be minimum 2.00. A course grade is constituted by evaluating the above stated elements and given by using letters.
