The Civil Engineering Department was established in 1998. The department is located at Iki Eylul Campus and occupies a covered area of 5000 m2. 8 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 7 Assistant Professors, 1 Instructor and 8 Research Assistants are currently working in the department. The department is governed by one department head and two deputy heads. One of the deputy heads takes care of technical activities of the department while the other deputy head assists the head in academic activities in the department. The primary education philosophy of the Department has been to provide a sound professional training which has been consistent with the current scientific and technological state of the art background supported by practice through laboratory applications in Civil Engineering discipline. The aim of the department is to educate the students by providing a broad knowledge in theory and in practice; equipping them with the skills to design and do research; and teaching them the importance of human rights.The instruction is supported by experimental applications and computer programs in laboratories (structural mechanics, construction materials, transportation, soil mechanics and hydraulics). Civil engineering department has agreements with various universities from Europe under the LLP/Erasmus program.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Depending on the degrees awarded, theoretical or practical courses taken as part of a degree (completed or not completed) may lead to recognition of these as prior learning by the programme administration. The students who have taken courses in another institution in Turkey or abroad can ask for credit and grade transfer. The executive boards of relevant programme will decide on the courses to be transferred covering students' entire academic program once and for all with the condition that the request for transfer be made within the first week of the academic year, the requests cannot be repeated.
This program requires compulsory Intensive English Language Training. The students are exempt from the Compulsory program if they have score of 70 or above from the centralized exemption exam, or present at least 65 from KPDS/ÜDS, 60 from IBT,140 CBT, 460 PBT TOEFL or 5,5 from IELTS.

A student is required to successfully complete the designated program of courses meet a minimum of 240 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00 and no FF, DZ or YZ grades.

Access to Further Studies

May apply to master's or doctorate programmes in any field or proficiency in fine arts programmes

Graduation Requirements

A student is required to successfully complete the designated program of courses meet a minimum of 240 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00 and no FF, DZ or YZ grades.
The language of the program is English. Normal duration is 4 years. The students have to take 240 ECTS credits which includes compulsory and elective courses. Students must take and pass all necessary courses and reach a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.00 before he/she can graduate. Each course must be passed with a notation that is at least DD or YT. The official language of instruction is English (0). Students who fail to pass the English test must attend a one-year English preparatory school and pass it before taking the department courses. All B.S.Students are required to perform summer practice as a part of graduation requirements. They must complete a summer practice of at least 60 working days.The first 30 days of the summer practice must be completed as building type summer practice. In the second 30 days, students can select and complete the summer practice as transportation, hydrology or soil mechanics type internship.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of Civil Engineering Program have a wide range of work fields. They can work both in public organizations such as General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Highways, Turkish State Railways, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Municipalities and in private organizations that provide services in contracting and project consulting in the construction industry. Some civil engineers can set up their own businesses about design, contracting and consultancy. Moreover, they can also pursue an academic career in universities.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

A variety of assessment methods such as mid-term(s), assignment(s), exercise(s), project(s), practice(s), and a final exam are implemented in the programme. Assessment methods may include classical test(s), multiple-choice test(s), homework(s), performance evaluation(s), and product evaluation(s). In order to graduate from the programme, cumulative GPA must be minimum 2.00. A course grade is constituted by evaluating the above stated elements and given by using letters. Letter grades and their associated coefficients are as follows;
Examinations, assessment and grading are held according to the regulations arranged by the University Senate. There are at least one midterm and one final examination for each course.Examinations are written examinations however if necessary they can also be performed orally or by practice work. The evaluation of the weights of the courses is determined by the lecturer at the beginning of the semester. The weight of the final examination can not be less than 40%. The final evaluation is performed by the lecturer. According to grading, it is accepted that the highests core AA is equivalent to 4.00; AB to 3.70, BA to3.3, BB to 3.0, BC to 2.70, CB to 2.3, CC to 2.0, CD to 1.70, DC to 1.30, DD to 1.00 and FF as 0.0. Scores between AA and DD are passing scores.All students are required to perform summer practices as a part of graduation requirements. They must complete a summer practice of at least 60 working days. For the summer practice evaluation, students have to pass both from the summer practice report and presentation. The evaluation is considered as unsuccessful for the students whose overall evaluation score is less than 60. During the summer practice presentations, each lecturer evaluates the students performance separately and an average score is calculated for the student. If the student fails, he/she will repeat his/her summer practice in a given time period.
