Profile of the Programme

Biology Department consists of six branches; General Biology, Zoology, Botanic, Molecular Biology, Ecology and Basic Industrial Microbiology. Biology, aiming to understand living organisms and living systems, is subdivided into research topics. Our research laboratories have appropriate infrastructure and technological equipment to enable master’s students to practice practical lessons and to carry out advanced research studies. Biology department lecturers conducts with the participation of students supported projects by Eskişehir Technical University, TÜBİTAK and DPT, collaborations with universities, research laboratories and centers are being carried out nationally - internationally.  Master's degree graduates of the Department of Biology can work in the academic staff of universities. In addition, graduates can find job opportunities in laboratories affiliated to health institutions, private research institutes, organizations affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment, food and medicine industry. Graduates with the required certifications can work for teacher position at private or public schools.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Depending on the degrees awarded, theoretical or practical courses taken as part of a degree (completed or not completed) may lead to recognition of these as prior learning by the programme administration. The students who have taken courses in another institution in Turkey or abroad can ask for credit and grade transfer. The executive boards of relevant programme will decide on the courses to be transferred covering students' entire academic program once and for all with the condition that the request for transfer be made within the first week of the academic year, the requests cannot be repeated.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student with a master's degree with thesis must have at least 7 courses and seminar courses, not less than 60 ECTS credits, proficiency exam and thesis proposal, and the Specialization Field Course and Thesis study, provided that it is not less than 180 ECTS credits. A student who has been accepted with a bachelor's degree must have at least 14 courses and seminar courses, not less than 120 ECTS credits, qualification exam and thesis proposal, and the Specialization Field Course and Thesis study, not less than 180 ECTS credits. A student enrolled in a doctoral program must have a grade of at least YT, CC or above from all courses taken, and a GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00. In addition, it is compulsory to take at least one course that includes Scientific Research Techniques and Research and Publication Ethics during graduate education. The duration of the program is 8 semesters for students who have a master's degree with thesis, and the maximum completion period is 12 semesters. For students admitted with a bachelor's degree, the program duration is 10 semesters and the maximum completion period is 14 semesters. During this period, the student who meets the above conditions and prepares and successfully defends his doctoral thesis graduates from the program. Access to Further Studies

May apply to doctorate programmes in any field or proficiency in fine arts programmes.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The graduates can be employed as teachers, researchers or experts in institutions that do basic and/or applied research in the fields of medicine, chemistry, veterinary sciences agriculture, biotechnology, and biology and many more as well as in education. They are also employed in drug manufacturing industry both as researchers and sales persons. They can work in hospitals or health clinics as biologists or technicians, as well as in government environmental units as councellors.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

A variety of assessment methods such as mid-term(s), assignment(s), exercise(s), project(s), practice(s), and a final exam are implemented in the programme. Assessment methods may include classical test(s), multiple-choice test(s), homework(s), performance evaluation(s), and product evaluation(s). In order to graduate from the programme, cumulative GPA must be minimum 2.00. A course grade is constituted by evaluating the above stated elements and given by using letters. Letter grades and their associated coefficients are as follows;
Examination regulations are one or two midterm exams, one final exam for the lecture courses. Generally,one midterm exam, a laboratory practice (or practice) grade system and one final exam are applied for thepractice courses.
