Profile of the Programme

The Civil Engineering Department was established in 1998. The department is located at Iki Eylul Campus and occupies a covered area of 5000 m2. 2 Professors, 5 Associate Professors and 6 Assistant Professors are currently working in the department. The aim of the civil engineering doctorate program is to educate students equipped with a good knowledge in theory and practice; knowing how to design and do research; paying attention to people’s rights and becoming beneficial people for their country and public. The education in the department is supported by experimental applications and computer programs in laboratories (structural mechanics, construction materials, transportation, soil mechanics and hydraulics). Civil engineering program has several agreements with various universities from Europe under the LLP/Erasmus program. These universities are; Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Halmstad University (Sweden), Institute Politecnico de Setubal (Portugal), Liverpool John Moores University (UK), National Technical University of Athens (Greece), Politechnika Krakowska (Poland), Ruhr-Universitat Bochum (Germany), Turku Polytechnic (Finland), Universidade do Porto (Portugal), University of Bordeaux (France), Warsaw University of Technology (Poland), University of Ostrava (Czech Republic) and Instituto Polytechnico da Guarda (Portugal). The doctorate program consists of at least seven courses with a minimum of 52,5 ECTS credits and a proficiency exam, thesis proposal, Research in Area of Specialization course and a thesis study with a minimum of 60 ECTS credits for students having a master of science degree. Students accepted with a B.S. degree have to take at least fourteen courses with a minimum of 105 ECTS credits, one seminar course, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, Research in Area of Specialization course and a thesis study with a minimum of 60 ECTS credits.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Depending on the degrees awarded, theoretical or practical courses taken as part of a degree (completed or not completed) may lead to recognition of these as prior learning by the programme administration. The students who have taken courses in another institution in Turkey or abroad can ask for credit and grade transfer. The executive boards of relevant programme will decide on the courses to be transferred covering students' entire academic program once and for all with the condition that the request for transfer be made within the first week of the academic year, the requests cannot be repeated.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

A student with an MA/MS degree is required to successfully complete a minimum of 7 courses, not less than 52,5 ECTS credits on the other hand student without an MA/MS degree enrolling in the doctorate programs is required to successfully complete a minimum of 14 courses not less than 105 ECTS credits. Both groups of students are required take the required Field Specialization course, pass the qualifying exam, have an accepted dissertation proposal and successfully compete doctorate dissertation work with a minimum of 60 ECTS credits, have a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 and no letter grades lower than CC and no YT, DZ grades.

Students who graduated from Civil Engineering Program Materials of Construction Division Doctorate program have awiderange ofwork fields. Graduates can work as an academician in the universities. Moreover they can work both in public organizations such as General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Highways, Turkish State Railways, Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, Municipalities andprivate organizations that provide services in contracting and project consulting.Somecivilengineerscan set uptheir own businesses about design, contracting and consultancy.
