Ability to explain corrosion mechanisms (chemical, physical, electrochemical) and the structure of electrochemical cells; and to differentiate between the types of corrosion attacks induced by environmental factors and corrosion cells on materials.
Ability to compare the corrosion resistance of non-ferrous materials with the behavior of stainless steels; and to select appropriate corrosion measurement methods to quantitatively evaluate corrosion damage.
Ability to apply cathodic and anodic electrochemical protection principles to engineering problems in order to mitigate environmental degradation of metals.
Ability to specify and design the most suitable surface treatment process (electroplating, PVD, CVD, anodization, or organic/non-metallic coatings) for a given operating environment and material pair, considering technical and economic criteria.
