Weeks Topics
Week - 1 “Introduction to Creative Writing, Fundamental Concepts: Creative thinking, imagination, and the essential elements of story. Application: Analysis of selected short stories and novel excerpts; comparison between written text and visual narrative (film scene).
Week - 2 Features of the literary text and narrative expression. Application: Comparative analysis of narrative structure through selected short stories/novels and film scripts.
Week - 3 “The concept of narrative and fundamental narrative theories. Application: Examination of the concept of narrative through selected novels and film scripts.
Week - 4 “Themes and Layers of Meaning in Story: Theme, message (main idea), and differences in expression. Application: Analysis of how the same or different themes and main ideas are conveyed through plot structure in selected novels and film scripts.
Week - 5 Narrative techniques in story: First-person, third-person, and omniscient perspectives; the impact of narrator choice on the story; the author’s use of language, rhythm, tone, and style; differences between visual and written narration. Application: Sample exercises exploring how the same event can be treated with different themes by various authors, and identifying the differences that emerge when transforming the narrative into a novel or a screenplay.
Week - 6 Creating Characters in Story: Character construction and development. Application: Character design exercise.
Week - 7 Types of Conflict and Building Dramatic/Intrigue Structures. Application: Exercises in creating conflicts based on theme and subject.
Week - 8 “Plot and Structure: The chain of events that drives the story; introduction, development, and conclusion. Organization of the narrative; classical dramatic structure (exposition–complication–resolution) and modern experimental forms. Key elements such as starting point, turning points, climax, and denouement. Application: Analysis of plot structures through selected novels and film scripts.
Week - 9 Use of Space/Time in Story and Its Impact on Dramatic Structure. Application: Descriptive exercises on setting; written depiction of a film scene’s environment and analysis of its influence on the dramatic structure of the story.
Week - 10 “The Function of Dialogue and Speech Patterns in Story; Differences in the Use of Dialogue in Literary Writing and Visual Narration. Application: Writing sample dialogues related to theme and plot, and creating dialogues for both novel and film narratives.
Week - 11 Visual Narrative Structure. Application: Short story writing exercises and visual storytelling (storyboard) practices.
Week - 12 Factors that Foster and Inhibit Creativity. Application: Creative writing exercises; students discuss their own obstacles and propose possible solutions.
Week - 13 “New Media Technologies and Their Use in Creative Writing. Application: Developing story outlines for blogs, podcasts, or short videos.
Week - 14 Peer Evaluation of Original Stories Created from Short Excerpts.
