Profile of the Programme

The Department of Flight Training was established to meet the increasing need for pilots trained in accordance with international civil aviation standards, in parallel with the development rate of the Turkish civil aviation sector.

The academic education comprises a total of eight semesters. During the first three semesters, academic education mainly focused on general aviation knowledge is provided. Subsequently, upon completion of the first semester of the second year, flight training begins and is conducted together with theoretical knowledge training. At ESTU, theoretical and flight training is implemented as a total of 2,074 hours.

Students of the Department of Flight Training are trained by completing integrated airline transport pilot training to a level at which they can serve as co-pilots on multi-pilot, multi-engine aircraft in commercial air transport, and they are enabled to obtain the CPL(A)/IR(A) licence. In addition, they also acquire the competencies to fly as pilot-in-command on any aircraft not engaged in commercial air transport, and to fly as pilot-in-command in single-pilot certified commercial air transport.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

A variety of assessment methods such as mid-term(s), assignment(s), exercise(s), project(s), practice(s), and a final exam are implemented in the programme. Assessment methods may include classical test(s), multiple-choice test(s), homework(s), performance evaluation(s), and product evaluation(s). In order to graduate from the programme, cumulative GPA must be minimum 2.00. A course grade is constituted by evaluating the above stated elements and given by using letters. Letter grades and their associated coefficients are as follows;
It’s based on Eskişehir Technical Univesity, Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics Flight Training Department education and examination regulation.ARTICLE 20-(1) The types and percentage information of assessments such as midterm and final examinations, assignments, and practical work of the courses shall be entered into the student information system database by the instructor teaching the course within the first two weeks of the semester and announced to the students on the course introduction page via the internet.(2) The total contribution of in-semester assessments to the success grade cannot be less than 30% and more than 60%. In practical courses where only a final examination is administered, the success grade is calculated according to the grade received in the final examination.(3) The student’s course success shall be determined by the instructor teaching the course with one of the letter grades, taking into account the overall achievement level of all students taking that course.(4) The letter grades and coefficients regarding the level of success are stated below.(5) In addition to the letter grades in the fourth paragraph, the following letter-graded evaluations are also used:a) The letter grade Withdrawn (ÇK) is used for the course from which the student withdraws within three weeks after the add/drop dates, with the approval of the academic advisor.b) The letter grade Continuing (DV) is given to the student who continues the course at the end of the first semester of a course lasting longer than one semester.c) The letter grade Absent (DZ) is given to the student who cannot satisfy the attendance requirement. This student cannot take the final examination. The grade DZ is equivalent to the letter grades FF or YZ.ç) The letter grade Incomplete (EK) is given to the student who cannot fulfill the requirements of the course on time. The letter grade EK is shown on the transcript until a new grade is assigned in its place. A student receiving this grade must complete the deficiencies before the beginning of the following semester; however, for theoretical and practical flight courses within the scope of the Training Manual, the student may also complete the deficiencies in the following semester. The EK letter grade of the student who completes the deficiencies within the given period is converted into a new letter grade according to the letter grade intervals of that course by the decision of the Unit Administrative Board. If the student does not complete the deficiency, the EK letter grade is converted into the letter grade FF or YZ, depending on the letter grade intervals used for that course, by the decision of the Unit Administrative Board.d) The letter grade Removed (KL) is given for courses removed from the programme.e) The letter grade Not Responsible (SD) is given to the student who fails the optional preparatory class.f) The letter grades Satisfactory (YT) and Unsatisfactory (YZ) are used for courses not included in the grade point average, upon the decision of the Unit Board and the approval of the Senate. The successful student is given the letter grade YT, and the unsuccessful student is given the letter grade YZ.(6) In order for a student whose GPA is at least 2.00 to be considered successful in a course, the student must receive YT, DD, or a higher letter grade in that course.(7) If the student fails in the emergency procedure during the daily flight, that day’s flight is cancelled. If flight cancellation is repeated three times during one phase, the student is referred to the Flight Board.(8) A student who fails at any stage of the theoretical and practical flight courses conducted within the scope of the Training Manual, or a student who displays flight indiscipline and cannot adapt to flight, is referred to the Flight Board without waiting for the end of the phase.(9) According to the report to be issued by the Flight Board regarding the student referred to the Flight Board, the Unit Administrative Board decides either on the repetition of the flight practice training or on the dismissal of the student from the University.ARTICLE 21-(1) The student’s academic standing is determined by the Semester Grade Point Average (DNO) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (GNO) at the end of each semester. Grade point average is calculated by dividing the sum of the values found by multiplying the credit value of each course included in the grade point average by the coefficient of the grade received from that course by the total credit value of these courses. If this process is carried out for the courses for which a letter grade is assigned in one semester, the Semester Grade Point Average (DNO) is obtained; if it is carried out for all courses for which a letter grade has been assigned up to that semester, the Cumulative Grade Point Average (GNO) is obtained. Grade point averages are shown with two digits after the decimal point.(2) The cumulative grade point average of a student who changes department/programme while continuing at any higher education institution is calculated by taking into account the letter grades of the courses taken in the previous department/programme and adapted, and all courses in the current department/programme for which a letter grade has been assigned.(3) In calculating the cumulative grade point average, the most recent grade and credit of a repeated compulsory or elective course are taken as the basis; in the event that another course is taken in place of an elective course, the grade and credit of the most recently taken course are taken as the basis.(4) In order for the student to be considered successful, the student’s cumulative grade point average must be at least 2.00 at the end of each semester. If courses are taken in summer school, the cumulative grade point average is calculated by also taking into account the letter grades assigned in summer school.(5) A student who receives the letter grade FF, YZ, or DZ in compulsory courses must retake these courses in the semester shown in the curriculum, starting from the one with the smallest semester number. The student may take a course that the student is obliged to repeat and that is offered outside the student’s own semester, if the student wishes. A student who receives one of the letter grades FF, YZ, or DZ in an elective/professional elective course repeats that course or, with the approval of the academic advisor, may take another course of the same status in place of that course.(6) A student who cannot achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 at the end of the fall or spring semester is given an academic deficiency warning. If the student who has received an academic deficiency warning raises the cumulative grade point average to 2.00 in summer school or in the following semester, the academic deficiency warning is removed. However, a student in this situation must retake the courses for which the student has received the letter grades FF, YZ, and DZ in the fall and spring semesters shown in the curriculum. The student may take these courses, if requested, in the event that they are offered outside the student’s own semester. A student who has received an academic deficiency warning and cannot raise the cumulative grade point average to 2.00 in the following semester must, in the next semester, starting from the one with the smallest semester number, retake in addition to the courses for which the student has received the letter grades FF, YZ, and DZ, the courses for which the student has received a letter grade below CC from the semester in which the academic deficiency warning was received. If the student achieves a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 at the end of the repeated semester, the student’s course repetition ends.(7) The success grade of the flight practice courses conducted with aircraft and simulator is determined on the basis of the flight sheets defined in the Training Manual.
