| Mode of Delivery |
Face-to-face. Teaching combines lectures, questions and discussion, critical appraisal of articles, case discussions and examination of example datasets. Students participate through experimental design, data interpretation, figure preparation and scientific writing activities. |
| Prerequisites |
There are no prerequisites or co-requisites for this course. |
| Courses Recomended |
No specific optional programme component is recommended. Undergraduate-level knowledge of molecular biology, genetics and basic statistics is recommended. |
| Required or Recommended Resources |
Teaching uses lecture notes provided by the instructor, selected research articles and reporting guidelines relevant to the weekly topics. The following books are recommended as core reference works. |
| Recommended Reading List |
Selected chapters from Ruxton and Colegrave address experimental design; Motulsky covers statistical thinking and interpretation; Gastel and Day support scientific writing. Lazic (2010), Weissgerber et al. (2015) and MIQE 2.0 (Bustin et al., 2025) are used to discuss pseudoreplication, data visualization and transparent reporting. Relevant sections of the ICMJE Recommendations and COPE Core Practices address authorship, data integrity, publication ethics and peer review. Readings are supplemented with current original research articles selected by the instructor. |
| Assessment methods and criteria |
Student achievement is assessed through one midterm examination and one final examination. The midterm assesses the formulation of research questions and hypotheses, identification of experimental units, selection of controls, and planning of samples and replicates. The final assesses interpretation of a provided research scenario and dataset, preparation of an appropriate table or figure, writing of selected manuscript sections, and reasoned responses to reviewer comments. Assessment criteria include scientific accuracy, methodological consistency, appropriate use of evidence, clarity of expression and adherence to ethical principles. |
| Work Placement |
No work placement or separate laboratory component is required. Experimental planning, data examination and manuscript preparation are undertaken as classroom activities and assignments within the lecture-based course. |
